What is Metabolism?

Metabolism is the complex network and biochemical processes via which your body converts the food you consume into energy. This process of converting food into energy can be broadly categorized into two types:

Catabolism: In this process, molecules are broken down to produce energy. Large molecules, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, are broken down into smaller units. Proteins are broken down into amino acids, fats into fatty acids, and carbohydrates into glucose.

Anabolism utilizes the energy produced during the catabolism process to synthesize important compounds like nucleic acids, proteins, and cellular structures. These compounds are pivotal for cell repair, growth, and maintenance.

How Metabolism Works

The following steps included:

Digestion: – The first and foremost step is digestion. This step converts proteins into amino acids, carbohydrates into glucose and fats into fatty acids or glycerol.

Absorption:- In this step, nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream via the walls of the intestines.

Cellular Respiration:-  Glucose is broken down into pyruvate in cells via glycolysis, producing some ATP. Pyruvate then enters mitochondria for the citric acid cycle, generating ATP.

Energy Storage and Utilization: ATP generated during cellular Respiration powers various cellular activities. Excess glucose is stored in the liver and muscles.

Factors Influencing Metabolism

Physical Activity: Exercise or physical activity significantly increases your metabolic rate. The more exercise you do, the more calories you burn.

Hormones:- Hormones such as thyroid hormones, adrenaline and insulin play a pivotal role in regulating metabolic rate. Thyroid hormones have a significant impact on your metabolic rate.

Environmental Factors: Factors such as cold temperatures can increase energy consumption, as your body needs to maintain a stable internal temperature.
